Diwali, also known as Divali or Dipavali, is one of the most significant Hindu festivals celebrated in Mauritius, where nearly half the population is of Indian descent. In 2025, the festival falls on Monday, October 20, and spans five days, each with its own customs and rituals. The celebrations culminate on the darkest night of the year, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. Homes are adorned with oil lamps called diyas, colorful rangoli designs, and vibrant decorations. Families come together to pray to Goddess Lakshmi for prosperity and to Lord Ganesh for wisdom.
