Mauritius is a paradise for food lovers, and it’s getting easier and easier to eat well here without any animal products. My husband and I are vegetarian, not yet vegan, but we’re still foodies at heart, and we’ve been curious to see what the island’s plant-based scene has to offer. This list is my attempt at a guide. I haven’t tried every place yet, so these are the restaurants and cafés that are on our to-do list, chosen for their ratings and reviews and for how seriously they take their vegan options. Some are fully vegan, others are vegan-friendly places with a clearly marked plant-based menu, and all of them are well rated. And if you’re fully vegan, I warmly recommend following Just Kris, who regularly shares the best vegan finds on the island. Here’s where we’re heading next, from the north coast to the south.

A fully vegan Middle Eastern spot, small and cosy, with about six tables and a focus on housemade seitan dishes such as burgers, burritos and shawarma wraps. Reviewers also rave about the falafel, crispy eggplant starter and mac & cheese, and the vegan desserts.
B13, Grand Baie
Asian Box
A Chinese kitchen that describes itself as 100% vegan, serving the classics. Reviewers single out the vegan duck noodles, dim sum and creative sides like peanut and radish, plus fried noodles with smoked tofu and crispy wontons. It’s tucked inside a petrol station forecourt, so don’t be put off.

Luigi’s
An Italian restaurant with a clearly labelled vegan section. Options include grilled mushrooms, palm salad, sautéed asparagus, bruschetta, pizza with vegan cheese, vegetable primavera and vegan lasagna. A good pick when you want proper Italian comfort food.

Acqua e Farina
A much-loved pizzeria that now has a dedicated vegan menu, created by the owner after growing requests from customers. These include bruschetta topped with vegan mozzarella, pumpkin cream and caramelised cherry tomatoes, penne arrabbiata with chilli oil and olives, and a creamy risotto. The vegan menu also includes a plant-based panna cotta with mango coulis.

A fully vegetarian restaurant where many dishes are vegan or can easily be made vegan. The menu covers Western-style food like burgers and pizzas, Indian food, and more local fare such as thali, curries, rice and noodles. The vegan thali comes highly recommended.

A stylish café where the vegan dishes are clearly marked: smoothie bowls, avocado toast, hummus, poke bowls and a mushroom sandwich, with plant milks for coffee. A Thai restaurant in a lovely garden setting. There are many vegetarian options (without fish sauce), and you can ask without eggs, so most of vegetarian options are also vegan. Reviewers suggest the spring rolls and papaya salad as vegan starters.

A hotel restaurant open to the public. The vegan food is clearly marked on the menu, including hummus, salads, chickpea curry, spiced couscous, Thai papaya salad, mushroom bolognaise pasta and noodle dishes.

A burger house known for its Mauritian-flavoured burgers. For non-meat eaters there is a vegan burger with a plant-based patty and a vegetarian burger, though the choice is limited. They only open in the evening, from 6 pm.
