In 2024, the Chinese Embassy, along with the China Cultural Center and various partners, presents a series of ‘Happy Chinese Year’ events to joyfully welcome the Year of the Dragon, promising prosperity and joy in the upcoming year.

1. Spring Festival Reception 2024

On January 31, 2024, at the Port Louis Cruise Terminal, the Chinese Embassy will host a grand cultural event, the Spring Festival Reception, inviting every sector of the Mauritian community to partake in the celebration of Chinese New Year. This year’s reception, centered around the theme of the ‘Chinese Dragon,’ will mark the beginning of the ‘Happy Chinese New Year’ activities for 2024.

2. “Happy Chinese New Year” Float Parade in Port Louis

On February 3, 2024, from 15:00 to 19:00 hrs, join us at Chinatown, Port Louis for the annual ‘Happy New Year’ Float Parade, a tradition since 2018. Featuring lion and dragon dance troupes, a dragon effigy float, the police band, and more, the parade will journey from the Municipality of Port Louis, passing iconic landmarks along Royal Road before concluding at the Chinatown arch. This much-anticipated event has become a highlight for both locals and tourists in Mauritius.

3. “The Auspicious Dragon is coming”– 12 Chinese Zodiac Signs Exhibitions

From February 5 to March 7, 2024, visit the China Cultural Center for an enchanting exhibition showcasing the 12 Chinese Zodiac Signs with a contemporary twist. Through innovative designs, the exhibition blends Chinese astrology, the rich dragon culture, and elements of traditional celebrations like the Spring Festival. The goal is to offer a captivating portrayal of how the Chinese celebrate festivals to friends from overseas.

4. Spring Festival Banquet

On February 7, 2024, at Hua Lien, don’t miss ‘The Spring Festival Banquet,’ a significant annual event bringing together the Sino-Mauritian community to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Collaborating with local Chinese associations, the China Cultural Center in Mauritius will present a splendid performance to enhance the festive atmosphere for all the guests.

5. “Happy Chinese New Year” Plaza Celebrations

On February 9, 2024, from 11:30 to 12:25, join in front of the Municipality of Port Louis for a cultural extravaganza welcoming the Year of the Wood Dragon. The Zheijiang Performing Arts Troupe and local Mauritian artists will collaborate to present a captivating cultural show.

6. Spring Festival Gala Show 2024

Experience an unforgettable cultural show on the first day of the Chinese New Year at J&J Auditorium, Phoenix, on February 10, 2024, from 16:00 to 17:30. A delegation of 32 artists from Zhejiang will present a mesmerizing showcase featuring graceful dances, enchanting folk music, breathtaking acrobatics, mesmerizing magic tricks, spectacular martial arts performances, and more.

7. “Happy Chinese New Year” Celebratory Activities

On February 17, 2024, from 17:30 to 20:30 in Quatre Bornes, and on February 24, 2024, from 18:00 to 22:00 in Rose Hill, join the festivities organized by the Municipalities in collaboration with the China Cultural Centre in Mauritius and the United Chinese Associations. The Quatre Bornes event features a float parade, lion and dragon dances, and other cultural performances. In Rose Hill, celebrate the Spring Festival with both a cultural show and a delightful food festival on the same day.

Chinatown’s Chinese New Year Celebration 

CNY will be incomplete without a visit to the cultural Chinatown in Port Louis. This historical landmark is getting well-decorated with lights and pretty lanterns and is definitely worth the visit. Chinese Spring Festival 2024 at Cascavelle Mall on 9th Feb from (6 pm – 9 pm)

There will be interesting activities like Lion andDragon parades, Traditional Chinese dance and drumshows, Martial Arts, Chinese Night Market, LED Lion Show, and Chinese Calligrapgy Demo.

Pagodas

On the auspicious first few days of the Lunar New Year, visit the Pagodas to pray for good luck, safety, prosperity, happiness, and well-being for your loved ones. Visiting a pagoda in the spring has become a valued custom for Chinese people from all around the world. 

1. Kwan Tee Pagoda- Port Louis

The Kwan Tee or Guan Di Pagoda is one of the oldest pagodas in Port Louis, Mauritius situated in a peaceful location overlooking the sea. It’s a very beautiful location with greenery everywhere and you will see people praying there. It’s a must-visit place during the spring festival and if you are lucky you might get to see the Dragon and Lion dance at the pagoda. 

 

2. Thien-Thane Pagode- Port Louis

If you are taking a stroll in Chinatown Port Louis, then do not forget to drop by this beautiful pagoda situated just 2 km away from Chinatown. Situated on the foothill of a mountain Thien-Thane Pagode is one of the most beautiful pagodas in Mauritius surrounded by beautiful nature and a peaceful ambiance. A perfect spot to meditate and enter the new year with positivity and mindfulness. 

 

3. Fook Soo Am Pagoda- Port Louis

Quite popular among the local Mauritian Chinese community, this pagoda should definitely be on your bucket list if you want to experience the non-touristy and local Chinese culture.  A peaceful location with many local Chinese people praying there.
