At Frolic, we firmly believe in the power of coming together to create a positive impact in our community. Last Friday, we had the privilege of co-organizing a Diwali event with the non-profit organization “Will Fly” for the kids of Grande Rivière Noire. The event was a great success, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the Frolic community who volunteered their time, skills and offered generous donations.
The Heartwarming Mission of Will Fly
“Will Fly” is a beacon of hope in the Mauritian community of Riviere Noire. This community-based organization has been serving underprivileged children and teenagers from the “cité” for over fifteen years. The “cité,” a Mauritian Creole term for a ghetto, often presents these young minds with challenges, including social and educational obstacles.
Will Fly’s mission is to provide after-school support to around a hundred children aged 3 to 17 from Rivière Noire. Beyond homework help, they offer a safe and nurturing environment where these children can meet others, receive positive influence, and find a sense of belonging. This work is instrumental in empowering these young souls to break free from the shackles of poverty and adversity.
Diwali: A Celebration of Light and Unity
Our Diwali event was a celebration of the Festival of Lights, a beautiful and meaningful tradition in Hindu culture. Diwali symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. The event was a great success, filled with fun and laughter. Our volunteers and members of the Frolic community organized a wide range of activities centered around the Diwali theme. From henna to mandala and dias painting or Bollywood dance, all the kids had a great time. We then shared some delicious indian snacks offered at a generous price by Mi Café and we gave all the kids a box of indian sweets from Patisserie Divine to go home.
Get Involved
As we celebrate the success of our Diwali event, we must remember that the work of Will Fly continues. They provide support to these children three times a week on Monday, Tuesday and Friday, and their need for volunteers and donations is ongoing.
If you’re inspired by their mission and want to make a positive impact in the Riviere Noire community, you can continue to make a difference for those children.
Please reach out to Marie-Anne Lagane, the president of the organization (email: mlagane@hotmail.com) to learn more about how you can volunteer.
