Just released this week, “Ni chaînes ni maîtres” (Neither Chains Nor Masters) is a historical drama set in 1759 on the Isle de France, now known as Mauritius. The film follows the harrowing journey of Massamba and Mati, two enslaved individuals on the plantation of Eugène Larcenet, who endure a life marked by fear and relentless labor. While Massamba dreams of freedom for his daughter, Mati longs to escape the oppressive environment of sugarcane fields. When Mati bravely flees one night, the notorious slave hunter Madame La Victoire is hired to capture her, forcing Massamba to take drastic action and escape as well. This act of defiance transforms him into a “marron,” a fugitive who permanently breaks free from the chains of colonial rule. Starring a talented cast, including Camille Cottin, the film powerfully portrays themes of resistance and the quest for liberation against the backdrop of Mauritius’s rich yet tumultuous history.

Released in March 2023, “The Blue Penny” is a mauritian film directed by Jon Rabaud. This gripping thriller explores pressing societal questions in Mauritius. Filmed over 24 days with a talented local cast and crew and set against the backdrop of the legendary Mauritian stamp, the Blue Penny, the film unfolds two layers of narrative: the first revolves around a crime and revenge within an affluent family, while the second addresses the growing social unrest in Mauritius, reflecting a collective feeling of disenfranchisement. Rabaud began writing the screenplay during the 2020 lockdown, inspired by global protests against police brutality, aiming to connect the stamp’s rarity with deeper social issues. “The Blue Penny” aspires to educate young audiences about their history and inspire artistic creation, emphasizing the urgent need for social cohesion in contemporary society. The film captures family tensions and dark secrets that culminate during a wedding celebration, creating a suspenseful atmosphere as vengeance looms in the shadows.
